The general secretary of the AIADMK Ms Jayalalithaa has assured that steps would be taken to accord Scheduled Caste status to Dalit Christians after the AIADMK comes to power. Campaigning in the Kanyakumari district, Ms Jayalalithaa assured that assistance would be extended to enable Christians to undertake pilgrimage to Jerusalem. 

Ms Jayalalithaa commenced her 10th day's campaign in Kanyakumari today. Speaking among the thousands of people gathered there, Ms Jayalalithaa gave the assurance that steps would be taken to accord Scheduled Caste status to Dalit converts to Christianity. Ms Jayalalithaa introduced to the voters the AIADMK's Kanyakumari constituency candidate K T Pachchaimal. Following this, she left for Nagercoil. Thousands of people gathered on both sides of the road to welcome her during the 18 kilometer stretch. Enroute, she was welcomed with the traditional Poornakumbam on behalf of the Suchindram Thaanumaalaiya Swami temple. At Nagercoil, she addressed a massive gathering. She assured them that the Nagercoil municipality would be upgraded to Corporation status. Ms Jayalalithaa introduced the AIADMK's Nagercoil constituency candidate Nanjil A Murugesan. Subsequently, she went to Colachal where she addressed a sea of humanity. She said that the Colachal and Chinnamuttam ports would be expanded after the AIADMK comes to power. Ms Jayalalithaa introduced the AIADMK's Colachal constituency candidate P Lawrence, Killiyur constituency candidate R George, the Vilavankode constituency CPM candidate Leema rose, and the Padmanabapuram constituency DMDK candidate Austin. After this, Ms Jayalalithaa visited Tirunelveli where she told the thousands of people gathered that firm steps would be taken for the development of education and economic condition of the minorities. Ms Jayalalithaa said that mining of sand from the Tamirabharani river would be banned to safeguard the precious water resource. Ms Jayalalithaa introduced the AIADMK's candidate for Tirunelveli constituency Nainar Nagendran, the Nanguneri constituency Samathuva Makkal Katchi candidate A Narayanan, Palayamkottai constituency CPM candidate V Palani, and the Radhapuram constituency DMDK candidate Michael S Rayappan to the electorate.

Jayalalithaa has sprung a surprise ahead of the April 13 assembly polls in Tamil Nadu. She has fielded an AIADMK veteran who has earned a name for himself by running a successful free coaching centre for IAS aspirants to take on the DMK's heir apparent M. K. Stalin.
Her choice of Saidai S. Duraisamy for the newly carved Kolathur assembly seat clearly shows that she wants to give the DMK heavyweight a run for his money.
A former AIADMK legislator of the MGR era, the dhoti-clad Duraisamy, 59, has proved to be a politician with a difference.
During his heyday in politics, he was the powerful AIADMK district secretary in south Chennai. But then, for a long time, the amiable Duraisamy kept a low profile and engaged himself in charitable work.
To his credit, he never sought greener pastures and, now, patience and perseverance seem to have worked in his favour.
Though it was expected that the seasoned politician would get the party ticket, his name did not figure in the first candidates' list released by 'Amma' last week. In the revised list, however, his name was the cynosure of all eyes. And he is already on the campaign trail.
But, for this politico, the CM's seat was never a dream; becoming an IAS officer was. When he could not make it, he started helping aspirants, mostly from the poor sections, through his free coaching centre that he launched in 2006.

Jayalalithaa set to sweep Tamil Nadu polls: Opinion poll

Jayalalithaa has moved past Karunanidhi to be viewed as the more favoured candidate for chief ministership.

The Tamil Nadu government beat back incumbency in 2006 and J. Jayalalithaa's tainted record as chief minister seemed to have something to do with it. But suddenly over the last one year, the shoe is on the other foot. As corruption charges multiply, the DMK and its partner Congress are facing a crisis of mammoth proportions. The Headlines Today-ORG opinion poll set out to map the anger of the population of Tamil Nadu. Here's what it found:

The first question was: Is corruption an important issue in these elections? Fifty-one of the population believes it is, while 34 per cent believe it is not.

Jayalalithaa has moved past Karunanidhi to be viewed as the more favoured candidate for chief ministership. Her 37 per cent approval rating gives her almost a 3 per cent lead over the present chief minister.

In fact, Karunanidhi's administration is now considered far more corrupt than the one provided by Jayalalithaa, with 39 per cent of those polled saying Karuna's government was more corrupt, while 21 per cent say it was the one ruled by Jaya.

If the DMK thought that the spectrum scam is beyond the understanding of the aam janata, they are badly mistaken. Fifty-one per cent people say they understand what the issue is and what A. Raja's involvement in the scam is. Seventeen per cent say they do not understand the scam.

Thirty-eight per cent of those polled said corruption and Karunandihi family's involvement in the 2G scam are an issue in these elections, while 26 per cent disagree.

Karunanidhi's handling of the killings of Indian fishermen by Lanka has further dented his image. A full 41 per cent of the people polled said they were not satisfied with the manner in which the government tackled this emotive issue and 25 per cent of the people said they were satisfied with Karuna's actions in the matter.

Lastly, price rise too may just queer the pitch for Karunanidhi with 59 per cent of voters believing it is a significant issue in these elections and 27 per cent believe it is not.

Finally, here's a look at what Headlines Today-ORG projects for the 2011 elections in Tamil Nadu. These are based on 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

In 2009, the ADMK alliance got 37 per cent of the vote share. DMK-Congress combine had 43 per cent of the vote share.

Two years later, ORG projects the ADMK alliance will get 50 per cent of the vote share, it's 45 per cent for DMK-Congress and 5 per cent for others.

If there were assembly elections in 2009, ADMK+ would have won 75 seats, while the DMK-Congress would have won 157 seats.

Look at how the tide has turned. ORG now projects the ADMK alliance romping home with 164 seats, while Congress and DMK will suffer a huge setback winning just 68 seats with Others getting 2 seats.

Indian minister offers free laptops, gold, grinders and rice before elections

India has the biggest democracy in the world. AIADMK Chief Jayalalitha, after filing her nomination from the Srirangam town for the Assembly polls next month, has announced that she would distribute 20 kgs of rice free for those having ration card.

The manifesto also includes laptops for students above 11th standard, four grams ofgold free for poor women, mineral water for the people, who come under the category of Below Poverty Line. The minister has indeed found the best way to lure the voters.

Moreover, free mixergrinders, fans and other domestic appliances have been distributed to the poor, which also includes cable connections at lower rates. AIADMK has also promised that if the party, based in Chennai, India, came in power then the government will offer free bus passes for all citizens above the age of 58.

The party has also promised 20 litres of mineral water a day along with four sets of uniform and foot wear for students for all families who fall under Below Poverty Line category. Assistance has also been assured for students above 10th standard, ranging from Rs. 1000 to Rs. 5000.

AIADMK manifesto 2011 offers free rice, laptops, gold and appliances

The Assembly Polls are fast approaching and the parties in the war are not leaving a single stone unturned to attract all the votes in their bags. Distribution of free food and appliances has become common.

The AIADMK has taken the tradition a step further and has announced that all the ration card holder in the state of Tamil Nadu inIndia will get 20 kgs of free rice, free fans, mixers, grinders, laptops for students from class 11 and mineral water for the people, who fall under the category of Below Poverty Line (BPL).

Moreover, the AIADMKchief Jayalalitha has also found a way to attract the women voters by offering four grams of gold for the poor, free of cost. Cable connections will also be distributed at nominal rates for the poor.

Jayalalitha started distributing the freebies after she filed her nomination from the temple town of Srirangam in the state of Tamil Nadu. To top it all the AIADMK has also promised that if the party came in power, free bus passes will be provided to citizens over the age of 58, including a restructured health insurancescheme for all.
